Introductions 2011
Our tenth season was an exciting one. Not only did it mark a new milestone with the alliance of Ball
and Selecta, it also marked another year of exceptional growth. Our Trixi™ program is our fastest
growing product line. Calibrachoa MiniFamous™ series took another leap ahead with our exclusive
doubles creating high demand. Magadi™ Lobelia, Namid™ Bidens and SuperTrouper™ Pot Carnation sales
skyrocketed.
With 39 new and improved varieties, Selecta makes sure that the program continues to be one of the best available. We are proud of our next generation MiniFamous™ Double series improved by a new color. MiniFamous continues to play an important role in our program as we continue to add unique varieties to North America’s #1 calibrachoa series. We also keep adding spice to our world-class osteospermum program, as well, with specialty colors. The all-new Zion™; Pink is finally a true pink osteospermum. Zion offers the specialty colors you have been craving. Watch the Selecta specialty pot and perennial line take a leap ahead with new varieties, including a stunning bi-color, in our SuperTrouper™ pot carnation program. And brand new in our program is Bonfire® Choc, a new dark foliage and an upright to mounding Begonia boliviensis series. We could go on and on about all the great innovations for 2011, but we suggest you check our digital version of SELECTA NEW VARIETY 2011 BROCHURE! |

Common mistakes with new crops
|
Overview: The industry is asking for new and exciting crops that sell and are easy for consumers. Breeders develop such new crops, but quite often they do require more attention from growers compared to crops we are used to growing. If done right, those crops will be a success and will be making more money. Crops included in this category: · Nemesia cultivars Serengeti® · Begonia boliviensis Bonfire® and Bellfire™ · Sanvitalia procumbens Tsavo™ Double Yellow · Osteospermum cultivars Kenai™ · Nierembergia caerula Lara™ · Angelonia cultivars Angelina™ |

Common mistakes with new crops: Ordering plant material too early: Short day conditions, lower light levels, and cold temperatures in soil and the greenhouse will lead to stunted plants and disease issues with Begonia, Sanvitalia, Nierembergia, and Angelonia. Solution - plant late. Very vigorous plants like Serengeti® Nemesia and Kenai™ Osteospermum will become overgrown and therefore sensitive to disease issues not to mention the associated quality issues and higher costs. Solution - plan short crop times. Overwatering: This goes hand in hand with the points mentioned above. Short days, low light levels, and cold temperatures slow plants down (or stunt / stall them), making them prone to overwatering. When the plants are wet, nutrition's can't be applied to keep them well fed. Once they are waterlogged, they sit and cause not only frustration to the grower but they will be more prone to diseases as well. Handling Liners: Don't ever let your liners become root bound, don't let them dry out, and especially don't let them get cold or over watered. |

Summary Most new crops benefit from dry cultivation, higher light levels, and long days. If your grower tends to be a wet grower, you may have even lost before you started. Begonia, Sanvitalia, Nierembergia, and Angelonia need higher temperatures as well. Contact your supplier before growing new crops and ask for detailed tech sheets and scheduling information. Many problems can be avoided by planting late. |
